چکیده
Storybook reading accompanied by adult-guided conversation provides a stimulating context for children's language development. Conversational agents powered artificial intelligence, such as smart speakers, are prevalent in homes and have the potential to engage children storybook partners. However, little research has explored effectiveness of using conversational support This study examined how an automated agent can read stories via speaker while asking questions providing contingent feedback. Using randomized experiment among 90 aged three six years, this compared these story comprehension verbal engagement with versus adult. The agent's guided was found be supportive improving that provided adult partner. At same time, uncovered number differences when interacting Specifically, who responded better intelligibility, whereas those higher productivity, lexical diversity, topical relevance. And two groups similar level accuracy. In addition, requiring high cognitive demand amplified between offers important implications developing researching systems • identifies affordances partners during reading. simulate effective partner Having dialogue or enhances comprehension. Adults elicit longer, more lexically diverse relevant responses promote intelligibility. Disembodied great enriching young experiences.

متن کاملTwo experiments comparing reading with listening for human processing of conversational telephone speech
We report on results of two experiments designed to compare subjects’ ability to extract information from audio recordings of conversational telephone speech (CTS) with their ability to extract information from text transcripts of these conversations, with and without the ability to hear the audio recordings. Although progress in machine processing of CTS speech is well documented, human proces...
متن کاملSame but different? - Using speech signal features for comparing conversational VoIP quality studies
Measuring speech quality in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks is an increasingly important application for legal, commercial and technical reasons. Any proposed solution for measuring the quality should be applicable in monitoring live-traffic non-intrusively. The E-Model proposed by the International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Standardisation Sector (ITU-T) achieves t...
متن کاملEye Communication in a Conversational 3D Synthetic Agent
Our goal is to create an “intelligent” 3D agent able to send complex, ‘natural’ messages to users and, in the future, to converse with them. We look at the relationship between the agent’s communicative intentions and the way that these intentions are expressed into verbal and nonverbal messages. In this paper, we concentrate on the study and generation of coordinated linguistic and gaze commun...
متن کاملLanguage-Driven Nonverbal Communication in a Bilingual Conversational Agent
This paper describes an animated conversational agent called Kare1 which integrates a talking head interface with a linguistically motivated human-machine dialogue system. The agent has a range of nonverbal behaviors, which involve a mixture of machine vision, computer animation and natural language processing techniques. The system’s architecture couples the agent’s nonverbal communicative pro...
